Two hundred sixty pine-clad islets dot a sheltered inlet like brushstrokes on a silk scroll — Matsushima, one of Japan’s *Nihon Sankei* (Three Most Scenic Views), has inspired poets since Bashō wept, “Matsushima ah, Matsushima ah, Matsushima ah,” unable to find words worthy of the panorama. The bay’s gentle topography — carved by rising seas after the last glacial maximum — creates a maze of channels where oyster rafts float beside pleasure boats. Four classic viewpoints (*Magnificent, Beautiful, Enchanting, Grand*) frame the islands differently: from Ōgitani’s hilltop the bay unfurls like a map; from Toyoma’s shore the pines seem to grow from the water itself. Zuigan-ji, a Zen temple founded in 828, anchors the mainland with its gold-leaf sliding doors painted by the Kanō school and a meditation cave where Date Masamune once sought counsel. The 2011 tsunami surged 3 m here, yet the islets buffered the town; today, rebuilt piers and a disaster memorial coexist with the timeless rhythm of fisherman hauling *kaki* (oysters) at dawn.

Practical information
Tips: From Sendai, take the JR Senseki Line (40 min, ¥420) to Matsushima-Kaigan Station — the bay is a 5-minute walk. The sightseeing boat loop (¥1,500, 50 min) departs every 30–40 min from the main pier; the *Matsushima Kisen* red-hulled boats have English audio. For the four viewpoints, rent an e-bike (¥1,000/hr) near the station — the 15-km loop is flat and scenic. Zuigan-ji (¥700) opens 8 am–5 pm; the adjacent Entsū-in garden (¥300) lights up for autumn foliage (late Oct–mid Nov). Try grilled oysters at the waterfront stalls (¥1,000 for 5) — peak season Jan–Mar. The bay is tidal; low tide reveals sandbars you can walk across to some islets (check timetables). Stay for sunset at Kanejima’s tea house — the last boat returns 4:30 pm winter, 5:30 pm summer.
