Cloaked in primeval beech and fir forests that climb the limestone spine of Gorski Kotar, Risnjak National Park feels like a secret Croatia has kept for itself. The park’s crown jewel, Veliki Risnjak (1,528 m), rewards hikers with a panorama that stretches from the Kvarner islands to the Julian Alps on clear days. Below the summit, the karstic valley of Leska unfolds in a mosaic of sinkholes, dry stone walls, and wildflower meadows where lynx — the park’s namesake — still pad silently through the undergrowth. The air here carries the resinous perfume of silver fir and the cool breath of the Kupa River’s emerald source, a turquoise pool bubbling from the earth at 313 m above sea level. Unlike the coastal crowds, Risnjak offers solitude measured in hours, not minutes; trails like the educational Leska Path or the demanding Schlosser’s Trail to the summit see more chamois than people. In autumn, the forest erupts in copper and gold, while winter drapes the peaks in a hush broken only by the crack of frost.

Crowning a 138-meter hill above the Rječina River canyon, Trsat Castle has guarded the gateway to Rijeka for over seven centuries. Originally a Liburnian hillfort, then a Frankopan stronghold, its massive circular towers and crenellated walls now frame a lively cultural quarter. The complex centers on the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Trsat, a major pilgrimage site since the 15th century, where a revered icon — legend says carried by angels from Nazareth — draws the faithful. The castle’s courtyard hosts summer theatre and concerts, while a charming café in the former garrison building serves craft coffee with vertiginous views over Rijeka’s port, the industrial elegance of the Torpedo factory, and the sparkling Kvarner Bay. Climbing the 561 steps of the ‘Petar Kružić Stairway’ from the city center is a rite of passage; driving up the back road is the sensible alternative. Either way, Trsat delivers a potent blend of spiritual gravity, feudal history, and one of the northern Adriatic’s finest panoramas.

The Lungomare is the Adriatic’s most elegant seaside promenade, a 12-kilometer ribbon of stone that stitches together the grand villas of Volosko, Opatija, and Lovran. Conceived in the late 19th century when Opatija was the Austro-Hungarian Empire’s answer to the French Riviera, it threads past manicured parks, Habsburg-era hotels, and the iconic “Girl with the Seagull” statue perched on a rocky outcrop. Walking its length feels like stepping into a Belle Époque postcard: the scent of pine and salt air mingles with the clink of coffee cups from waterfront cafés, while the sea crashes rhythmically against the parapet. It is a living museum of coastal grandeur, equally suited to a dawn power-walk or a sunset aperitivo.
