About Schongau
Schongau is a picturesque Bavarian town where medieval fortifications still encircle a vibrant old town. Perched above the Lech River, its well-preserved walls, towers, and gates invite leisurely strolls through cobblestone lanes lined with frescoed façades. The town’s relaxed rhythm blends historic charm with modern café culture, while the surrounding Alpine foothills offer easy access to hiking, cycling, and the famed Romantic Road.

Pilgrimage Church of WiesFreeKid-friendlyHistoricalCulturalNatureArchitecturalArtisticSpiritualScenicUnique
Nestled in a meadow basin at the foot of the Alps, the Wieskirche appears like a rococo mirage — its white stucco walls and onion dome glowing against emerald pastures. Built between 1745 and 1754 after a peasant woman witnessed tears on a wooden Christ figure, the church is Dominikus Zimmermann’s masterpiece: a light-flooded oval where every surface breathes stucco arabesques, pastel frescoes, and gilded putti. The ceiling, painted by his brother Johann Baptist, unfurls the Last Judgement in a swirl of celestial blues and rose pinks that seems to dissolve the vault into heaven. Pilgrims still arrive on foot along the ‘Pilgerweg’, yet the atmosphere remains one of hushed wonder rather than spectacle. It is Bavarian Rococo at its most ecstatic — architecture as prayer.
